2002 Ford Explorer Transmission Repair in Charlotte NC
About the 2002 Ford Explorer:

The Ford Explorer is a full-size crossover SUV sold in North America and built by the Ford Motor Company since 1990, as a replacement for the smaller but related Ford Bronco II. It is manufactured in Louisville, Kentucky (it was also assembled in Hazelwood, Missouri until the plant closed on March 10, 2006). The Ford Explorer was instrumental in turning the SUV from a special-interest vehicle into one of the most popular vehicle types on the road.

The Ford Explorer has a huge problem with transmission failure, mostly from the early 2000s — especially the 2002–2004 Ford Explorer. Transmission problems in Ford Explorers are one of the most commonly complained about issues of any car on the road. One dealer even claims that 1 out of every 10 Explorer’s from the early 2000 model years will have transmission failure at some point.

What signs can you look for when it comes to transmission failure with the 2002 Ford Explorer? A common first time symptom is the blinking O/D light and noise, such as rattling or clanking, while shifting gears. If you are experiencing any of these transmission problems (trouble shifting, noises, O/D light is on), please contact us for a free diagnostic. Transmission problems only worsen with time. Sometimes, if the problem is not too severe, you can avoid a complete overhaul, but if you wait too long it may be your only option.

2002 Ford Explorer Transmission Problems

Possible Solution to Transmission Problem Symptoms as listed above:

Some transmission repair shops will recommend replacing the solenoid pack. Solenoid pack will only repair certain conditions, such as delayed, harsh shifting into reverse and harsh shift from 1st to 2nd gear, and / or 740 torque converter code.

Although, a 740 code torque converter clutch can also be attributed to a hydraulic cross leak or or worn valves in the valve body, or a bad torque converter. Also, shift codes can be attributed from worn servo bores in the case. In that instance, this would call for the case to be fitted with new sleeves to repair the worn servo bores. This would be done in a complete transmission rebuild process.

To determine the exact solution for your transmission problem, you vehicle needs to be tested. We can properly scan your vehicle and do a hydraulic pressure test. This hydraulic pressure test will determine if you have an electrical, hydraulic or mechanical problem. Call us at 704-821-3460 to schedule this test.

2002 Ford Explorer Transmission Fluid Flush / Check

Sometimes Transmission problems can be the result of a transmission not be serviced on time. If the transmission fluids have not been changed or if the fluids are low, this can very quickly cause a problem in any vehicle’s transmission. The 2002 Ford Explorer does not come with a dipstick to check the transmission fluid, but there are ways to still do so. Ford did come out with a special tool needed for servicing the transmission fluids, which can be purchased, but it isn’t commonly found. If you are in need of a transmission fluid flush for your 2002 Ford Explorer, please contact us at 704-821-3460 to schedule an appointment.
