Automatic Transmission Diagnosis | Charlotte NC

Why do I need a professional Transmission Diagnosis for my Transmission problem? What does a Transmission Diagnosis involve?

For the most car drivers, the Automatic Transmission is a mystery. Put your gear selector in “D” for Drive–the vehicle goes forward. Put your gear selector in “R” for Reverse–the vehicle goes backward. Put your gear selector in “P” for Park–and the vehicle stops so you can cut the engine off. Most car drivers may know that the transmission requires fluid, but they have probably never checked the levels. So when the transmission becomes hard to shift, gears are slipping, making noises or when the gears do not work properly, most car drivers do not have a clue to what has caused this problem. This is why a Transmission Diagnosis is very important.

transmission diagnostic twin 02102011jpg resized 600An Automatic Transmission Diagnosis involves special computer system scan tools, specialized hydraulic pressure testing equipment, and advanced technician training.  Here at Twin Automotive, we use the newest and most advanced computer technology to diagnose your transmission or automotive problem. Using a device that mimmicks the look of a handheld tablet or laptop, we connect this special computer system to your vehicle. This tool will read not just the codes from any check engine light malfunction, but also reveal information that gives us an inside look at the problems with your vehicle.

Merely retrieving a code and trying a part, without an Automatic Transmission Diagnosis, will do little to repair the problem and may even damage expensive automatic transmission or emission control components.

When there is a problem with your transmission, the best thing to do is to call us immediately. Transmission problems only worsen with time. The sooner you have a transmission diagnosis performed and the problem fixed may be the difference between a minor transmission repair and a major costly transmission repair.

Automatic Transmission Problems & Diagnosis

When an automatic transmission is malfunctioning, it may exhibit one or more symptoms, such as harsh or delayed shifting, the loss of one or more gears, engine RPM “flare ups” between shifts, fluid leaks, slipping or lack of power to the drive wheels, and/or Check Engine Light or transmission overdrive illumination. When these types of symptoms occur, it is important to have an Automatic Transmission Diagnosis.

One of the most common complaints with automatics is fluid leaks. Fluid can leak out of the driveshaft seals, the input shaft seal, the transmission pan gasket, the torque converter or the ATF cooler and line connections. If the fluid level gets low, the transmission may be slow to engage when it is shifted into drive. Gear shifts may be sloppy or delayed, or the transmission may slip between shifts. If the fluid level is really low, the transmission may cause the vehicle to not go at all

If a vehicles Check Engine light is on, it means the computer has detected a fault and has set a diagnostic trouble code. There is no way to know if it is an engine code, transmission code or body code, so you will have to plug a scan tool or code reader into the diagnostic connector to extract the code.

If the transmission OD (overdrive) light is on or flashing, it means the transmission controller has diagnosed an internal transmission fault. To diagnose the problem, a scan tool that can read transmission codes must be plugged into the vehicle diagnostic connector (usually located under the dash near the steering column). The scan tool will then display the transmission code(s) that turned the warning light on. What happens next depends on the code. If the code indicates an internal performance problem, the transmission will probably need special attention to determine the problem and repair. But if the code indicates an electrical fault, it may mean a bad sensor or solenoid. When this problem is displayed, it is important to determine if there are any other underlying problems to the electrical fault. Replacing a damaged solenoid may only temporariliy fix your problem, until it breaks again, and then you have to start the process all over.

Electrical fault codes are set when the transmission controller or PCM detects an open or a short in a shift solenoid, shaft speed sensor or other device. Performance codes are set when the computer sends out a command, such as a 2-3 shift, but the transmission does not respond properly. Don’t be fooled by a faulty sensor or solenoid only replacement. Many of these problems have more underlying issues that need to be solved to prevent the same error from happening again.

Car A/C Service Cost | Charlotte NC

Why should I get my car A/C serviced or checked?
I didn’t use it since last summer — it must still work fine!

Here at Twin Charlotte, we hear questions and statements like the two above all the time. Just like other types of auto services, what you don’t know about them can and will cause severe damage to your vehicle. In order for every component in your vehicle to run properly and efficiently, you need to have specific services performed to avoid major and costly repairs. Transmission fluid flushes, oil changes, tune-ups and A/C Checks are all types of auto repair services your vehicle needs. Today, we explain why you need to have you car A/c checked before you assume its working condition and potentially cause major issues:

Your air conditioning should be checked for proper operation and Freon charge at least once a year. Freon is very hard to contain in an automotive system. The reason is your air conditioning compressor operates at all different speeds due to engine RPM. The rest of the system is comprised of many dissimilar materials that expand and contract at different rates and along with the movement of the engine; this allows a minute amount of Freon to escape. This is normal and that’s why the system should be checked for low charge.

You might say, “I do not use my A/C system during winter months”, but the truth is you do all the time, no matter what season. Everytime you put the defrost on, the A/C system compressor turns on to to dry the air before it is directed to the windsheild.

Checking the car A/C system for the correct amount of freon is very important because the freon carries the A/C system oil. This A/C system oil is the lubucates the moving parts working insde the A/C system.Insufficient freon can damage your compressor and all the parts in the A/C system resulting in costly repairs. Car A/C systems should also be tested at least once a year to make sure the freon levels are at the proper levels specified by the car manufacturer. These specific amounts enable your vehicle to operate efficiently. Not knowing if you have the proper fluid or freon levels, and just Waiting to see if the A/C system works in your car or truck, may result in unnessary damage. Its best to be prepared and have a A/C check performed.

Get it done right
Lastly make sure that the shop you are using for your A/C repair is using the right kind of A/C system servicing equipment. The wrong equipment will result in a improper A/C system service which will cost you more money in the long run. Here at Twin Charlotte we use the most advanced A/C diagnosing, checking and refilling tools and equipment.

Today’s car and truck A/C systems are not like they were 30 years ago. Some car owners may think the only step involved to “fix” a broken A/C is to recharge with some fluid, but this procedure should be left to the professionals. As explained earlier, improper levels of fluid or improper handling of materials can result in severe damage to your vehicle.

Its not expensive
This type of service is not very costly. For just between $95 to $145 (given the amount of freon or repair your vehicle requires), you can ensure you and your passengers will be riding with complete cool air this hot summer. For a free estimate specific to your vehicle, an A/C system check or more, please contact Twin Charlotte directly at 704-821-3460

Transmission Repair Estimate, Prices and Cost | Charlotte NC

Transmission Repair Prices, Transmission Repair Estimates and Transmission Repair / Rebuild Costs in Charlotte NC:

Transmission Repair cost charlotte ncIn simple terms, an automobile transmission is the component that allows the power of the engine to drive the wheels of a car. An operating transmission is a finely tuned dance between the mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems controlled by a computer. There are gears, pumps, valves, seals, gaskets, cables and other parts that all must work in concert. In other words, this is a complex mega-system that quite simply makes the car move. Without a transmission, the car goes nowhere under its own power.

With all of these potential problem points, it is clear that the repair of an auto transmission can smite a royal blow to anyone’s budget. The often unexpected cost can be traumatizing: your car may be literally un-drivable, requiring an immediate repair whether you had it planned in your budget or not. For example, the average cost of transmission repair can cost anywhere between $600 – $6000, and a transmission replacement / rebuild could run anywhere around $1800 – $3500 or more, all depending on the make and model of your vehicle, the type of transmission it uses, and the transmission repair that needs to be done. Usually, the more expensive type of vehicle you have, the more expensive the repairs will be. Luckily, Charlotte’s Transmission King, Twin Automotive & Transmission is here to help you solve any and all transmission problems. Get the best service on your transmission repair, with Charlotte’s Longest Transmission Rebuild Warranty at a competitive price and costs. Quite simply, we strive on providing you the best service and repair — at the best price possible.

Transmissions are highly complex mechanical devices, so it is actually most cost-effective to rebuild the transmission, rather than continually troubleshoot and repair it pieces at a time — if the problem is servere, eventually the transmission will completely fail. A transmission rebuild will allow you to get more life out of the transmission than just a transmission that has had a part or two repaired.

Costs of Internal Transmission Problems and Repair

The cost of solving internal transmission problems are a very involved process. Depending on your vehicle, there will be a certain amount of time (labor) involved to remove and reinstall (R&R) the transmission and also tear down and reassemble. Once the transmission is apart, all the seals, gaskets, sealing rings, and other internal parts are replaced by using a complete transmission overhaul kit with parts specific to your transmission. This is one main reason why a transmission rebuild is worth the cost because the savings is not worth the risk of leaving old parts which can fail later. A transmission rebuild repair cost typically includes replacing broken internal parts, seals, gaskets and other parts found inside the transmission.

Costs of External Transmission Problems and Repair

When external repairs are done, such as replacing solenoids and sensors, it is a good idea to check that there are no underling reasons for the parts failure. Replacing a solenoid that is clogged with clutch material will work…until it clogs again.

Tips on Transmission Repair Estimates, Prices, Buyer-Beware: Don’t End Up On The Hook

In many cases, we have been contacted to help assist people we have previously given estimates to. The problems they have are with other transmission shops that have their vehicle. They want to change their vehicle from their shop to our location, but are having difficulty. See how we differ from other Charlotte Transmission Repair shops here.

Before you let anyone remove, dismantle and inspect (RDI) your transmission ask these questions: How much is it going to cost? Does it include reassembling and reinstalling or at least making the vehicle tow-able in the event you want to remove it from the shop?

The last thing you want to happen is get quoted what may be an unfair price only to find out it will cost $600.00 to get it out. Many shops will do this. This can and does happened…Don’t be a victim.

It is true that the actual cost of repairing a transmission sometimes can’t be determined until the unit removed and torn down. Estimates and ranges of prices can be given, but there are many variables that can affect the overall price. Price range can be given …so your not thinking hundreds when its thousands.
