Unlike a manual transmission an automatic one has a shorter life. Moreover, automatic transmissions require more care than manual ones. From time to time automatic transmissions require certain maintenance tweaks. This includes fluid change and flush and solenoid repair.

If a minor repair is ignored, the transmission may develop a major fault because of it. In the event of major failures, a transmission can be repaired, replaced or rebuilt. Replacing a transmission is not always a convenient option as new transmissions cost a heft amount. The best options are rebuilding a transmission or repairing it. Let’s look at what each of these methods entails:

Repairing a Transmission

Repairing a transmission is a cost-effective option if your transmission is faulty. This involves removing the transmission and locating the parts that are causing a problem. The auto transmission usually has to be disassembled to do so, depending upon the issue. Once the issue is located, the necessary parts are replaced to ensure that the transmission works fine. Repairing a transmission costs less as only the faulty parts have to be repaired. Moreover, it doesn’t require much effort to replace a few parts. However, a rebuild is a costlier option.

Rebuilding a Transmission

Rebuilding a transmission is a hectic job and requires the utmost precision. When rebuilding a transmission, the entire transmission has to be disassembled. Firstly the faulty parts are located. Once this is done, each and every aspect of the transmission is inspected thoroughly. This is done to locate potential future failures in the transmission. Parts that have even the slightest bit of wear are replaced as well, even though they are working fine for now. This process is costly in terms of parts as well as the effort it takes to inspect each part of the transmission.
