Much like a car’s engine oil, the transmission fluid should also be flushed at regular intervals. Do keep in mind that cars with automatic transmissions require regular fluid flushing or changing. However, manual transmissions can go a lot longer without a fluid flush or change, or even a top up. (Did you know that over 80% of all transmission problems are caused from lack of transmission maintenance?)

One of the biggest sources of confusion is the difference between a flush and change. Most people assume them to be the same thing. However, transmission oil flush and fluid changes are two different things. Let’s look at how often you should have the transmission fluid flushed:

Frequency of Flushing Transmission Fluid

There are many theories as to how often you should get the transmission fluid flushed. In an ideal situation, you should have the fluid flushed every 10,000 miles. You can do it before this mark or a little after. If you want a benchmark as to when the fluid should be flushed, it is best to refer to the manufacturer’s maintenance guide. Make sure you follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to the last detail. Flushing the transmission will remove the old fluid from it.

Once done, a cleaning solution will be used to clean the insides of the transmission. After the transmission is cleaned, new fluid it is poured in. This keeps the transmission in top shape and prevents premature failure. If you ignore flushing the transmission, it could cause drastic damage to it.

Flushing In Case Of an Issue

One thing to remember off the bat is never to flush a transmission if it has minor failure symptoms. In some cases a mechanic may recommend a flush to fix an issue. Flushing a transmission to fix an existing issue never works, in fact, it only worsens the problem.

If your car’s transmission fluid has never been flushed and you have it flushed to fix an issue, the transmission will most probably give way. On the other hand, if you are having any issues, the best option is to have the transmission repaired or rebuilt. Once that’s out of the way, make sure you flush it regularly to keep it in top shape.
