A common issue with automatic transmission is the slipping of gears. There are many indications that tell you that your transmission is slipping gears. The transmission will downshift randomly or it may lose the gear altogether. Even though this is a common issue, it shouldn’t be ignored. This is because a simple gear slipping issue could develop into something major over time. There are many reasons why a transmission may slip gears.

If you come across a gear slipping issue with your car’s transmission, be sure to check the following probable causes:

Transmission Fluid Filter

The transmission fluid is like blood in a human body. Without the fluid, the transmission cannot run properly. Over time the fluid gathers dirt from the transmission and the filter makes sure the dirt doesn’t get back into the transmission. This causes the filter to get clogged over time. When the filter is clogged, a regular flow of transmission fluid cannot be maintained. This is the first place you should look if you are experiencing gear slipping. If the filter is clogged, you should replace it and everything should be back to normal.

Transmission Fluid

This issue is quite similar to that of the clogged filter. If the transmission fluid level is low, then it won’t properly lubricate and cool the components. This will result in gear slipping. Right after you change the fluid filter, you should look towards the fluid level. This can be checked using a dipstick. You can consult your car’s manual to see where the dipstick is located. If the fluid level is low, top it up. Moreover, you should check for leaks in the transmission as the oil may be leaking.

Torque Converter

Torque converter is responsible for transmitting the power generated in the gears to the wheels. A torque converter works similar to the clutch system in a manual transmission. If a torque converter is faulty, it won’t shift gears properly and the gears may even slip. Unfortunately, this cannot be fixed by you. You will need to consult with a professional regarding this. The transmission will have to be removed and repaired.
