Top Transmission Problems | Transmission Repair Charlotte NC
Believe it or not, your transmission is one of the most important parts inside your vehicle. If your transmission fails, your vehicle will not be able to move. The transmisison controls power from your engine to your driveshaft, which helps turn the wheels of your car. Good preventive maintenance can help to keep your transmission in shape, but high mileage, age, and common wear and tear on the vehicle can still create a transmission problem.
Here are some of the most common transmission problems that cause for repair:
1) Clutch Transmission Problems
Your vehicle’s transmission clutch is located within the torque converter. Clutch problems can commonly be confused with fluid problems. This is because when the clutch jams up, the transmission solenoid may lock up — causing the amount of transmission fluid in the torque converter to be incorrectly calculated. This type of problem normally causes voilent shaking underneath the vehicle and high heat levels in the transmission. Power output in the engine can also drop. When left unserviced or not repaired, a clutch problem can easily cause massive damage to your transmission by overheating the transmission or causing damage to internal gears due to incorrect fluid levels.
2) Low Transmission Fluid Levels or Leaks
Low transmission fluid or transmission fluid leaks are a very common transmission problem. Sometimes transmission fluid leaks are caused by leaks inside the transmission unit. Due to wear and tear on the vehicle, or even just age, the seals inside the transmission or driveshaft may have become faulty, thereby leaking transmission fluid. Occassionally, transmission gasket seals may also need to be replaced in order to seal the leaks inside the transmission.
Another type of transmission fluid problem would be if the transmission fluid becomes contaminated. Some vehicles with radiator issues can cause radiator coolant to leak into the transmission. This would contaminate the entire transmission fluid supply causing the need for the all fluid to be drained and replaced.
Signs of low transmission fluid or a transmission fluid leak include slipping gears, slow shifting or hard shifting. Old transmission fluid can also cause these problems, in which you would also need to replace / change the transmission fluid with a transmission flush and then have the transmission refilled with new transmission fluid.
3) Transmission Solenoid Problems
The transmission solenoid’s job is to control the flow of fluid inside the transmission. When the transmission solenoid becomes damaged, it is usually because of insufficient levels of transmission fluid OR due to electronic problems within the transmission solenoid. If your transmission is slipping and there are no leaks, the transmission solenoid is the first item that should be checked for repair.
4) Transmission Torque Converter Problems
One of the most common transmission problems with the torque converter is if the torque converter is worn or has damaged needle bearings. When the torque converter needle bearings become worn, you may experience strange noises coming from inside the transmission while driving in gears. Sounds noises include grinding or brushing sounds. Torque Convertors can be the source of several other types of problems as well, but needs to be properly checked for diagnosis to repair.
