Rebuilt Transmission Prices vs Used Transmission | Charlotte NC

OK, so your Transmission is not working. Your gears are slipping, not shifting at all, you lost the ability to drive forward or maybe your car isn’t moving at all! Now what do you do? In most transmission cases, your transmission can be repaired, or even replaced with a used transmission. But how do you know which to choose?

Charlotte’s best transmission shop – Twin Automotive&Transmission Repair – can help you solve your transmission problem. Known as the Transmission King of Charlotte, Twin Automotive has dealt with hundreds of broken transmissions throughout North Carolina, providing the solution to get customer’s moving again.

A Transmission can fail due to a number of reasons and it is never an appealing position to be in. A transmission in need of repair cannot be ignored. Sometimes if the problem is so severe, or even if it has reached a certain number of miles on the transmission, the vehicle is ready for a transmission rebuild.

But what is the difference between a rebuilt transmission vs used transmission?
Can a used transmission really save money?
These are questions we hear from Charlotte NC car owners almost every day of the week.

To make this question easier to answer, here are the facts (and differences)
between a Rebuilt Transmission vs Used Transmisison:

Used Transmission
*a Used Transmission is a transmission that has been in a car for a certain number of miles, but is currently not in a vehicle — commonly sold online and found in a junk yard
* Used transmissions come “as is” and may have weak internal parts which may lead to another transmission problem down the road.
* Used transmissions usually carry 30 day warrantys, 1 year warranty, or no warranty at all
* Used transmissions may typically be cheaper, but they also carry a sometimes unknown number of miles on them — meaning after a used transmission is installed, it is more likely to fail sooner, leaving you out of your money and back where you started

Rebuilt Transmission
* Rebuilt Transmission means that the transmission has new internal parts replaced, but still remains in the old transmission case. If the transmission case is broken, this is fixed or potentially, replaced.
* Soft parts such as gaskets, seals, filters, valves and clutch components are replaced in a rebuild when necessary
* Rebuilt transmissions are tested and carry a longer warranty than any used transmission – Twin Automotive, Charlotte’s Transmission King, offers the longest transmission rebuild warranty in Charlotte – 3 Years / Unlimited Miles. (Used Transmissions usualy carry a 30 Day Warranty)
*All parts are inspected in a Transmission Rebuild to ensure weak internal parts are replaced. This allows your transmission to live much longer than a used transmission would.

So yes, a used transmission may cost less than a rebuild in the beginning, but once that used transmission reaches its life’s limit, you will be back at square one, potentially repaying the money you already spent plus more. Used Transmissions may not fix your transmission problem, especially if your used transmission already has weak internal parts that are worn.

Rebuilt Transmissions, such as being offered by Twin Automotive, come with a long, 3 Year / Unlimited Mile Warranty. With a rebuilt transmission, you can rest safe at mind that your transmission problem has been fixed, instead of taking a chance with a used transmission that may have pending internal damage. In almost every case, purchasing a used transmission that has unknown flaws or damages may have saved you a few hundred dollars at the beginning, only to spend twice to three times as much later when you still need to have the transmission rebuilt.

What Causes Transmission Slipping?

Automatic Transmission Diagnosis | Charlotte NC

Why do I need a professional Transmission Diagnosis for my Transmission problem? What does a Transmission Diagnosis involve?

For the most car drivers, the Automatic Transmission is a mystery. Put your gear selector in “D” for Drive–the vehicle goes forward. Put your gear selector in “R” for Reverse–the vehicle goes backward. Put your gear selector in “P” for Park–and the vehicle stops so you can cut the engine off. Most car drivers may know that the transmission requires fluid, but they have probably never checked the levels. So when the transmission becomes hard to shift, gears are slipping, making noises or when the gears do not work properly, most car drivers do not have a clue to what has caused this problem. This is why a Transmission Diagnosis is very important.

transmission diagnostic twin 02102011jpg resized 600An Automatic Transmission Diagnosis involves special computer system scan tools, specialized hydraulic pressure testing equipment, and advanced technician training.  Here at Twin Automotive, we use the newest and most advanced computer technology to diagnose your transmission or automotive problem. Using a device that mimmicks the look of a handheld tablet or laptop, we connect this special computer system to your vehicle. This tool will read not just the codes from any check engine light malfunction, but also reveal information that gives us an inside look at the problems with your vehicle.

Merely retrieving a code and trying a part, without an Automatic Transmission Diagnosis, will do little to repair the problem and may even damage expensive automatic transmission or emission control components.

When there is a problem with your transmission, the best thing to do is to call us immediately. Transmission problems only worsen with time. The sooner you have a transmission diagnosis performed and the problem fixed may be the difference between a minor transmission repair and a major costly transmission repair.

Automatic Transmission Problems & Diagnosis

When an automatic transmission is malfunctioning, it may exhibit one or more symptoms, such as harsh or delayed shifting, the loss of one or more gears, engine RPM “flare ups” between shifts, fluid leaks, slipping or lack of power to the drive wheels, and/or Check Engine Light or transmission overdrive illumination. When these types of symptoms occur, it is important to have an Automatic Transmission Diagnosis.

One of the most common complaints with automatics is fluid leaks. Fluid can leak out of the driveshaft seals, the input shaft seal, the transmission pan gasket, the torque converter or the ATF cooler and line connections. If the fluid level gets low, the transmission may be slow to engage when it is shifted into drive. Gear shifts may be sloppy or delayed, or the transmission may slip between shifts. If the fluid level is really low, the transmission may cause the vehicle to not go at all

If a vehicles Check Engine light is on, it means the computer has detected a fault and has set a diagnostic trouble code. There is no way to know if it is an engine code, transmission code or body code, so you will have to plug a scan tool or code reader into the diagnostic connector to extract the code.

If the transmission OD (overdrive) light is on or flashing, it means the transmission controller has diagnosed an internal transmission fault. To diagnose the problem, a scan tool that can read transmission codes must be plugged into the vehicle diagnostic connector (usually located under the dash near the steering column). The scan tool will then display the transmission code(s) that turned the warning light on. What happens next depends on the code. If the code indicates an internal performance problem, the transmission will probably need special attention to determine the problem and repair. But if the code indicates an electrical fault, it may mean a bad sensor or solenoid. When this problem is displayed, it is important to determine if there are any other underlying problems to the electrical fault. Replacing a damaged solenoid may only temporariliy fix your problem, until it breaks again, and then you have to start the process all over.

Electrical fault codes are set when the transmission controller or PCM detects an open or a short in a shift solenoid, shaft speed sensor or other device. Performance codes are set when the computer sends out a command, such as a 2-3 shift, but the transmission does not respond properly. Don’t be fooled by a faulty sensor or solenoid only replacement. Many of these problems have more underlying issues that need to be solved to prevent the same error from happening again.

How to Tell if Your Transmission is Failing

Rebuilt Transmission Cost | Charlotte NC

Rebuilt Transmission Costs Charlotte NCTwin Automotive, known as Charlotte’s Transmission King and charlotte rebuilt transmission specialist, explains why a  transmission rebuild can save you more money than buying a used transmission:

For over 30 years, Twin Automotive Charlotte customers have asked, what can save me more money — a used transmission or a rebuilt transmission? The answer comes easily when the facts about a used transmission are revealed.

A Used transmission is a transmission that was originally inside another vehicle and used for a certain amount of miles before it was removed. Most used transmissions are sold online or found at a junkyard. The biggest common misconception about used transmissions is that buying a used transmission will save you money. In the short time, it may save you since a used transmission is usually cheaper than a rebuilt transmission, but in the long run, that used transmission with its xxxxxx amount of miles, wear and tear, will fail—costing you additional on transmission repairs or forcing you to do what you should have done before and have the transmission rebuilt.

Why will a used transmission fail? Since used transmissions already carry a certain amount of miles before being installed in your vehicle, the internal parts already carry wear and tear, meaning they could break and cause significant transmission problems at any time. When a transmission fails, a rebuilt transmission can be done — this process entails removing the failed transmission from the vehicle, opening it up, inspecting all internal parts, replacing any broken or worn parts and then rebuilding the transmission with new transmission fluids. To put it simply, when you purchase a used transmission, you are most likely just buying some time till that transmission will fail, just like your previous one did.

Most used transmissions also come with a 30 day warranty or sold as is. Charlotte’s Transmission King, Twin Charlotte, offers a 3 year / Unlimited Mile warranty on all rebuilt transmission repairs. When it boils down to saving money, the right decisionis to always spend money wisely the first time by investing in the future, not just for the moment.

Transmission Repair Estimate, Prices and Cost | Charlotte NC

Transmission Repair Prices, Transmission Repair Estimates and Transmission Repair / Rebuild Costs in Charlotte NC:

Transmission Repair cost charlotte ncIn simple terms, an automobile transmission is the component that allows the power of the engine to drive the wheels of a car. An operating transmission is a finely tuned dance between the mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems controlled by a computer. There are gears, pumps, valves, seals, gaskets, cables and other parts that all must work in concert. In other words, this is a complex mega-system that quite simply makes the car move. Without a transmission, the car goes nowhere under its own power.

With all of these potential problem points, it is clear that the repair of an auto transmission can smite a royal blow to anyone’s budget. The often unexpected cost can be traumatizing: your car may be literally un-drivable, requiring an immediate repair whether you had it planned in your budget or not. For example, the average cost of transmission repair can cost anywhere between $600 – $6000, and a transmission replacement / rebuild could run anywhere around $1800 – $3500 or more, all depending on the make and model of your vehicle, the type of transmission it uses, and the transmission repair that needs to be done. Usually, the more expensive type of vehicle you have, the more expensive the repairs will be. Luckily, Charlotte’s Transmission King, Twin Automotive & Transmission is here to help you solve any and all transmission problems. Get the best service on your transmission repair, with Charlotte’s Longest Transmission Rebuild Warranty at a competitive price and costs. Quite simply, we strive on providing you the best service and repair — at the best price possible.

Transmissions are highly complex mechanical devices, so it is actually most cost-effective to rebuild the transmission, rather than continually troubleshoot and repair it pieces at a time — if the problem is servere, eventually the transmission will completely fail. A transmission rebuild will allow you to get more life out of the transmission than just a transmission that has had a part or two repaired.

Costs of Internal Transmission Problems and Repair

The cost of solving internal transmission problems are a very involved process. Depending on your vehicle, there will be a certain amount of time (labor) involved to remove and reinstall (R&R) the transmission and also tear down and reassemble. Once the transmission is apart, all the seals, gaskets, sealing rings, and other internal parts are replaced by using a complete transmission overhaul kit with parts specific to your transmission. This is one main reason why a transmission rebuild is worth the cost because the savings is not worth the risk of leaving old parts which can fail later. A transmission rebuild repair cost typically includes replacing broken internal parts, seals, gaskets and other parts found inside the transmission.

Costs of External Transmission Problems and Repair

When external repairs are done, such as replacing solenoids and sensors, it is a good idea to check that there are no underling reasons for the parts failure. Replacing a solenoid that is clogged with clutch material will work…until it clogs again.

Tips on Transmission Repair Estimates, Prices, Buyer-Beware: Don’t End Up On The Hook

In many cases, we have been contacted to help assist people we have previously given estimates to. The problems they have are with other transmission shops that have their vehicle. They want to change their vehicle from their shop to our location, but are having difficulty. See how we differ from other Charlotte Transmission Repair shops here.

Before you let anyone remove, dismantle and inspect (RDI) your transmission ask these questions: How much is it going to cost? Does it include reassembling and reinstalling or at least making the vehicle tow-able in the event you want to remove it from the shop?

The last thing you want to happen is get quoted what may be an unfair price only to find out it will cost $600.00 to get it out. Many shops will do this. This can and does happened…Don’t be a victim.

It is true that the actual cost of repairing a transmission sometimes can’t be determined until the unit removed and torn down. Estimates and ranges of prices can be given, but there are many variables that can affect the overall price. Price range can be given …so your not thinking hundreds when its thousands.

Transmission repair costs can vary. If you want to know what transmission repair prices or costs you may be looking at, please contact us at 704-821-3460, or stop by for a free estimate.

Rebuilt Transmission Prices in Charlotte NC

So you think you have a Transmission problem…
Car won’t move? Check Engine Light on? Trouble Shifting Gears?
These are all common symptoms of a transmission problem. That means you may need a transmission repair or possibily a complete transmission overhaul, called a “Transmission Rebuild”.

First..What are my Options?
Rebuilt Transmission Vs Used Transmission

There are many benefits to a Rebuilt Transmission vs Used Transmission:

1) A Rebuilt Transmission has all new internal parts (although it still remains in the old transmission case)
2) Soft parts such as gaskets, seals, filters, valves and clutch components are replaced in a rebuilt transmission if needed
3) Rebuilt transmissions are tested and carry a longer warranty than any used transmission

Rebuilt Transmission Repair charlotte ncUnlike Rebuilt Transmissions, a Used Transmission is a transmission that has been in a car for a certain number of miles, but is currently not in a vehicle — commonly sold online or found in a junk yard. Used transmissions usually carry 30 day warrantys or no warranty at all. Used transmissions are typically sold “as is” and may have weak internal parts which may lead to another transmission problem down the road.

Rebuilt Transmission Prices

There are a certain amount of labor hours and parts that go into a Transmission Rebuild. The amount of labor hours vary based upon your type of vehicle. The parts the need to be rebuilt in the transmission may also vary depending on the shop that rebuilds your transmission. Twin Automotive & Transmission of Charlotte rebuilds all types of transmissions and is one of the only rebuilt transmission shops in Charlotte that will include everything needed for a complete transmission rebuild in their quotes (Some shops will charge additional for a new solenoid pack, torque converters, hard parts or more) For complete pricing on a rebuilt transmission, call Twin Automotive at 704-821-3460.

What to Ask or Look for in a Rebuilt Transmission Price

* Transmission Solenoid: Beware of auto repair shops that state you may only need a solenoid replaced. Many Rebuilt Transmission shops will price a solenoid replacement at a very low cost, just to get someone in their door. Although you may need your solenoid to be replaced, replacing only the solenoid will not usually fix your transmission problem and could still cost you the price of a transmission rebuild. Reputable rebuilt transmnission shops like Twin Automotive & Transmission will include the solenoid in their rebuilt transmission pricing.

* Customer Testimonials: Don’t be shy to ask for customer testimonials or look online for reviews of the rebuilt transmission shop.

* Rebuilt Transmission Warranty: Twin Automotive & Transmission offers Charlotte’s LONGEST Transmission Rebuild Warranty. Be weary of shops that only offer warranties 6 months to a 1. The industry standard for minor repairs are between 1 – 3 years. Rebuilt Transmissions are a major repair. The shop performing the transmission rebuild should be able to stand behind their work with a minimum 2 – 3 year warranty.

Other important things to know about Rebuilt Transmissions:
* Transmissions can take between 1 – 3 days to be rebuilt, although older models may need additional time if parts need to be special ordered.
* Simple transmission repairs like linkage adjustments could take only up to 45 minutes
* Inside 1 transmission contains hundreds of parts
* Transmission Fluid is the most important part of your transmission. Make sure your transmission is serviced regularly.
* The most common cause for transmission repair is fluid buildup damaging the transmission
