Much like an engine oil change, changing the transmission fluid is also extremely necessary. The contaminated fluid has to be removed and refilled with clean fluid. However, a simple fluid change doesn’t always do the trick. This is because some of the contaminants remain within the engine. These contaminants get mixed with the new fluid. To avoid this, car manufacturers recommend a transmission flush.
A transmission flush is performed with the help of a pump. This pump drains the old fluid from the transmission. If necessary, the pump also cleans the transmission from within. This is done by pumping a cleaning solution into the transmission. This solution efficiently cleans the entire transmission from within. Once the entire transmission is cleaned, it is filled with new fluid.
A transmission flush is quite essential to ensure your auto transmission is working in full form. Moreover, it also removes the impurities that develop within the bell housing over time. If these impurities are not removed, they could damage the transmission. Most manufacturers recommend that you flush the transmission every 24,000 to 30,000 miles. There is no harm in flushing the transmission before the specified time. However, you should not go above the benchmark. The flushing cleans the internal transmission components and leaves them spotless.
Moreover, if there are any shavings or impurities in the engine, it pushes them into the transmission pan. This makes it easy for the mechanic to access the pan and remove the contaminants. Once the new fluid is used, the transmission begins performing like new. You should always monitor the transmission fluid level of your car as well. If the fluid level is low, you should have it checked. There could be a leak. However, you should never perform a flush if your fluid is burnt and smelling.
If you waited too long to have the flush done, the fluid burns and retains fragments from the transmission. In such a scenario, the fluid should not be changed, let alone flushed. This is because your transmission is already damaged and will have run for some time on the old fluid. If the fluid is changed, the transmission will halt working immediately.
You should always take your car for regular maintenance to ensure you don’t face such issues.
